A characteristic of Honduran society is that it has profound social inequalities and high levels of poverty. Honduras has the highest proportion of the population living in poverty in Central America, with a total of 70% in conditions of poverty, 48.2% in conditions of extreme poverty, and 36% in conditions of "chronic" poverty (PENCONARE, 2016, pp. 130-138).

Estimates put unemployment at about 27.9%, which is more than 1.2 million Hondurans. Honduras is the sixth-poorest or least-developed country in Latin America, following only Haiti, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Guyana, and Bolivia. Honduras was declared a heavily indebted poor country by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund Honduras experiences extreme destitution in its rural areas. Inequality also exists between rural and urban areas as it relates to the distribution of resources.  Poverty in concentrated in southern, eastern, and western regions where rural and indigenous peoples live.

Poor communities typically live in adobe homes, lack material resources, have limited access to medical resources, and live off basics such as rice, maize and beans.
